Right to Food—UN Visit to Canada

From May 6 to 16, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Olivier De Schutter, visited Canada on a mission to examine the way in which the human right to adequate food is being realized in Canada.
Over the course of the 10-day visit, the Special Rapporteur met with federal government ministries, provincial and municipal authorities, political party officials, Aboriginal groups and communities in four provinces, and convened meetings with civil society organizations in five cities across Canada.
On May 16, press conferences were held on Parliament Hill by the Special Rapporteur and by Foundation grantee, Food Secure Canada—one of the organizations to help facilitate meetings for the Special Rapporteur’s visit—highlighting the need to adopt a national food strategy.
