Wahkohtowin Development G.P. Inc. – Tree to Home

Background of the organization

Based in Ontario’s Northeast Superior Region, Wahkohtowin is a social enterprise owned by three First Nations (Brunswick House First Nation, Chapleau Cree First Nation and Missanabie Cree First Nation). They use a collaborative approach to economic development that builds social, cultural, environmental and economic wellbeing. They work with First Nations to become full participants in the forestry sector, including sustainable forestry harvesting, as well as cultural activities, housing, guardianship and land-based learning. 

Project description

The Tree to Home project addresses lack of housing in First Nations communities. This project has two complementary components:   

     1) produce and erect housing, with locally sourced wood through local enterprises; 

     2) develop a “Train to Employ” program that supports local skills development. 

McConnell funding will also enable Wahkohtowin to codify this model to share with other First Nations.
