Background
Lac-Mégantic is a town of 6,000 citizens in the Eastern Townships region of Quebec. On July 6, 2013, the town of Lac-Mégantic experienced the worst industrial accident in Canadian history: 72 rail tanker cars carrying petroleum products derailed, causing a fire that flattened two square kilometers of the town centre, destroyed dozens of homes and businesses, contaminated the soil to a depth of 70 feet, and killed 47 people. As they rebuild, the citizens of Lac-Mégantic are committed to shaping a built and natural environment that respects tradition, meets the highest environmental standards, fosters a vibrant local economy, and revitalizes the town’s civic spirit.
Full Description
The Foundation’s grant will support a participatory design process that will meaningfully engage citizens in reimagining and reconstructing the town. It will also support the involvement of University of Sherbrooke students and faculty in providing technical expertise, documentation, and communications.
