Sierra Youth Coalition – Sierra Club of Canada

Background

Sierra Youth Coalition, which has been active since 1996, is a Canadian organization run by youth for youth, serving as the youth arm of the Sierra Club of Canada. The SYC has grown into a national youth environmental coalition with members in all regions of Canada, and local groups operating out of high schools, universities and communities.

Through grassroots action, SYC aims to address unsustainable practices through a solutions-based approach that promotes education for sustainability, bioregionalism, and sustainable communities.

Sierra Club of Canada has been active in Canada since 1963 with chapters in every region of Canada.

SCC has developed major national campaigns within four program areas: Health & Environment, Protecting Biodiversity, Atmosphere & Energy, and Transition to a Sustainable Economy.

Full Description

The Sustainable Campuses Project is a national initiative that inspires, informs, trains, and supports Canadian students working toward social equity, ecological integrity and economic prosperity on their campuses. These changes are achieved through changing institutional operations, improving curricula and mobilizing campus community members support.

Since 1998, the Sustainable Campuses Project has worked with thousands of students from across Canada in order to change environmental and social practices on Canadian campuses and to empower youth to influence decision makers.

At the end of 2005, SYC was working with 36 campus partners and the broader network included over 45 campuses. During the next three years, the focus will be on increasing and broadening the impact of the Sustainable Campuses Project, including increasing the number of campus partners to 55, with an emphasis on community colleges.
