Moose Hide Campaign Development Society

Background of the organization:

Founded in 2011, The Moose Hide Campaign Development Society is a not-for-profit whose mission is to raise awareness about the issue of violence against Aboriginal women and children; to engage Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal men to speak out against this violence; and to create and support opportunities for peer support and peer accountability amongst men regarding violence towards women and children.

Grant description:

The Moose Hide Campaign was created to turn the idea of violence being a women’s issue on its head, and to remind Canadians that the legacy of residential schools is collective responsibility, not a burden for Indigenous people to carry alone. Since 2011, the Moose Hide Campaign has been providing men and boys with opportunities to publicly commit to ending violence among their peers and their Elders, with the commitments being witnessed and supported by the women and girls of hteir communities.

Over the next three years, the Moose Hide Campaign will expand its impact and reach across Canada by continuing to raise awareness on the issue, expand programs and services for men and boys, and work to change the policies that create barriers for women and their children who are trying to leave abusive relationships. This will be done through creating a community grants program to support communities crating spaces for men and boys to become part of the solution; developing a national resource tool to assist communities, expanding the Campaign’s reach so that 500,000 men are participating tin the annual fast; and hosting an annual national gathering to engage leaders, policy makers, funders and supporters to share best practices and lessons learned.
