Les Grands Ballets Canadiens (LGBC)

Background

Founded in 1952, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens (LGBC) is an internationally renowned company of 38 dancers who perform across Canada and internationally. Since 2013, in partnership with several universities and health care institutions, LGBC has been piloting dance and movement therapy (DMT) programs with seniors, people with limited mobility, adolescents with eating disorders, and women who have experienced abuse. Early results are promising and LGBC is proposing to expand the program in Quebec and eventually across Canada.

Full Description

A grant from the Foundation helps LGBC strengthen its capacity to offer its dance and movement therapy (DMT) program through a network of institutional partners, and contribute to building recognition and acceptance for dance therapy among practitioners and the public. In its initial implementation phase, the DMT program is operating five pilot projects with 30 partners from the health, education and community sectors. Therapy and related research activities will help post-stroke patients, girls with eating disorders, and female assault victims. Nine more pilot programs are in development in the Montreal area and there is interest from groups in Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver.
