Héritage Montréal

Background of the organization

Founded in 1975, Heritage Montreal aims to promote and protect the architectural, historic, natural and cultural heritage of Greater Montreal. The organization works on multiple fronts: increasing awareness and advising decision-makers whose actions affect heritage; informing the public and private sectors of protection mechanisms; and assembling, mobilizing, and coordinating interests between social organizations, municipalities and citizen groups.

Project description

Funding for this project aims to improve the quality of life of citizens by preserving, renovating and enhancing heritage properties and increasing the use of buildings by non-profit organizations. A study of 60 municipalities in the Communauté Métropolitaine de Montréal identified the gaps in linking heritage building revitalization to social uses.

Based on an analysis of best practices, Heritage Montreal has developed a catalyst model with two key elements: (1) facilitating processes between public authorities, local communities or organizations and (2) leveraging multiple investments.

The project will be developed in collaboration with community organizations seeking space, organizations offering coaching services and government program managers.
