Equitas International Centre for Human Rights Education (2010 – 2013)

Background

Equitas was established in 1967 by a group of leading Canadian scholars, jurists and human rights advocates with a mandate to advance democracy, human development, peace and social justice through educational programs. Equitas is a global leader in human rights education.

Full Description

In 2008, with support from the Foundation, TD Bank and various levels of government, the Play It Fair! program was implemented in over 200 summer camps. Approximately 2,000 individuals were trained to deliver the program and over 40,000 children were reached in day camps and after school programs in Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, Winnipeg, Moncton-Dieppe and Fredericton.

Building upon this success, this grant will support Equitas in developing a cohort of trainers within organizations such as the Boys and Girls Clubs, school boards and municipalities who will disseminate the program within their networks. The overall goal of this phase of the initiative is to significantly increase the reach of the program by transferring ownership and responsibility for Play it Fair! to other organizations.

In focusing on younger children and the recreation sector, the Play it Fair program complements the Foundation’s Sport for Development initiative, which uses sport to foster healthy lifestyles and leadership skills.
