Centre de répit Philou

Background

The Centre répit Philou is a private charitable organization founded in 2005 by Diane Chênevert and Sylvain Brosseau, parents of Philippe, who was born in 2000 and suffers from severe cerebral palsy. The Centre welcomes physically disabled children of up to twelve years of age for programs that include respite, stimulation, and day camps. While children benefit from tailored programs, family members can take time to rest from the extensive care required for their severely handicapped children.

Grant Description

Building on the Quebec Ministry of Education, Leisure, and Sport program (MELS) for children with profound intellectual disabilities, the Centre de répit Philou will offer an extended program oriented towards social integration, physical rehabilitation, and integrated teaching, combined with periods of respite for the family.

Delivered by teachers and readaptation specialists, the Centre Philou Muscade program will provide children with personalized support. A typical day will include six hours of motor, sensory, and cognitive therapy and two hours of group socialization activities. Families will be mentored in supporting their child’s learning by integrating new approaches into home life.

A grant from the Foundation will support the Centre de répit Philou’s extension of the MELS program and evidence-based demonstration that an integrated approach centered around the child and a collaboration among respite centres, the health care system, and education specialists provides optimal outcomes for children and their families.
