University of British Columbia

Background

The University of British Columbia was established in 1908. Today, UBC’s strong commitment to community service learning is tied to its vision statement and associated strategic plan, called Trek 2010. This vision has three central themes:

  • the development of the qualities of global citizenship among students
  • the strengthening of civil society
  • the advancement of sustainability

Full Description

This project received funding under Phase II of the University-Based Community Service-Learning Initiative.

The model for the advancement of curricular community service learning (SCL) is called the UBC-Community Learning Institute. It builds on a successful model for project-based CSL that has taken place during Reading Week at UBC since 2002.

By 2010, 5% of UBCs undergraduate students will be involved annually in curricular CSL in non-profit organizations. The project has a strong knowledge and evaluation component that will also support the broader national initiative.

UBC will also work closely with Volunteer Vancouver to develop a capacity- building program that ensures that all participants in the Institute have the knowledge and skills they need. Volunteer Vancouver will also help form partnerships between community organizations and the university and identify ideas and plans for community-based projects.
