Ulnooweg Financial Education Centre (UFEC)

Background

Founded in 2013, Ulnooweg Financial Education Centre (UFEC) focuses on advancing education in First Nations communities in Canada and Indigenous communities outside Canada by teaching financial, accounting, economic, governance, business and strategic planning principles, practices, and skills. The Centre also conducts research into the social, financial, economic, demographic and development conditions, needs and opportunities of these communities.

Full Description

Building on their success in seven Atlantic First Nations communities, a grant from the Foundation will enable the UFEC to overhaul, formalize, and prepare for regional, national, and possibly international replication, of the highly successful Community Financial Review Process, in use on a local level since 2007. It is expected to help equip First Nations governments with the tools and resources required to make sound financial decisions for their communities. This initiative is the first of its kind in Canada.
