Trent University

Background

Established in 1963, Trent University is a small liberal arts and sciences university with about 3,150 full-time students. The Trent Centre for Community-Based Education is a cooperative initiative that facilitates community-based research and experiential learning.

The Centre provides opportunities for students, faculty and local organizations to pool their resources and work together on community-inspired projects that enhance the social, environmental, cultural or economic health of the community.

Full Description

This project received funding under Phase I of the University-Based Community Service-Learning Initiative.

This grant is to support A New Blueprint for Service Learning: The Trent Centre for Community-Based Education.

Trent University’s approach overcomes a persistent challenge in the field of service learning, namely to achieve a truly balanced, reciprocal relationship with local communities.

Trent has established a non-profit organization that delivers community service learning and is co-directed by representatives from the University and community leaders. The Centre has been active in the region surrounding Trent University, involving about 75 students and 40 community groups annually in recent years.

Over the next five years, the program will expand to enable 200 students, 25 instructors, and 70 organizations to participate each year, serving rural and urban organizations across 10,000 square kilometers of central Ontario.
