Douglas Foundation

Background of the organization

The Douglas Foundation’s mission is to unite great minds and build resources to improve the mental health of all, today and tomorrow.

The Douglas Institute was founded in 1881 by Alfred Perry in the Verdun borough of Montreal. The Douglas is the realization of the idea that human beings should not be condemned to live an existence apart from society because of mental illness.

Established in 1979, the Douglas Research Center is the largest mental health research center in Quebec and second in Canada. The Douglas Research Center’s objective is to promote mental health and well-being through a better understanding of the causes, treatment and prevention of psychiatric disorders by applying cutting edge scientific methods to the particular challenges posed by mental illnesses.
