Sacred Fire Productions

About the organization

Founded in 2012, Sacred Fire Productions (SFP) is a non-profit Indigenous arts organization that helps Indigenous cultural entrepreneurs access markets and benefit from broader exposure to the cultural granting councils and creative industries (i.e. fine arts, film, craft, jewellery design, fashion, etc.). This work preserves traditional practices, drives sustainable development and creates work for Indigenous people in rural, remote and urban communities.

Grant Description:

Many Indigenous artists face unique challenges in getting their work seen and supported. In particular, remote and isolated artists can find it difficult to connect with mainstream audiences, and may find themselves in competition with knockoff ‘Indigenous art’ that is factory produced but marketed as authentic. By creating opportunities for Indigenous artists to receive mentorship, training and showcase their work, Sacred Fire Productions supports the revitalization and (re)appropriation of Indigenous arts and cultural practices, traditionally rooted in communities. The Foundation’s grant will enable Sacred Fire Productions to advance its work by hiring additional staff to increase the number of artists they support and to enable the Executive Director to advocate for the policy change required to protect Indigenous arts.
