Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre

Background of the organization

The Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre (MNFC) has been operating since 1973 and its mission is to improve the lives of Indigenous peoples living in an urban environment through social and cultural programming in Halifax. Their services and activities are open to all, and their approach exemplifies Indigenous/non-Indigenous collaboration at both the staff and community level.

Project description

Funding to MNFC is to build stronger community resilience and cohesion, by creating an inclusive, participatory platform with a range of local partners and inspired in part by the Participatory City approach. MNFC is adapting the approach to centre Reconciliation in ways that invite everyone to be a part. The project will engage at least 3,000 people from a range of backgrounds, including newcomers to Canada, children, elders, and Black and Indigenous communities.

Every One Every Day (EOED) Kjipuktuk-Halifax will create neighbourhood spaces to host resident-led collaborative projects and business incubation initiatives, including pop-up shops, newspapers, initiatives by local artisans, and more. The team will also help steward the development of a new permanent facility for the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre on unceded land adjacent to the historical landmark at Citadel Hill. Every One Every Day Kjipuktuk-Halifax will have a base in the new Friendship Centre and become one of the global nodes for learning and training of the Participatory City network.
