Keepers of the Water

Background of the organization

Keepers of the Water is an Indigenous-led coalition of First Nations (Treaty 6, 7, 8 and 11), environmental groups and concerned citizens working together for the protection of water, air, land, and all living things within the Arctic Ocean Drainage Basin. Formed in 2006, Keepers of the Water elevates traditional Indigenous water governance by emphasizing Indigenous land-based knowledge, language and culture.

Project description

Funding will support Keepers of the Water’s campaigning to influence Federal regulatory frameworks which will determine if 1.4 trillion litres of oil industry toxic waste ‘tailings ponds’ will be released into the Arctic drainage basin as early as 2025. Activities include public outreach (lectures/convenings), a tar sands healing walk and the engagement of a government relations specialist.
