Iron & Earth

Background of the organization:

Iron & Earth is a worker-led not-for-profit organization which helps former oil and gas workers build a career in the clean  energy sector through career counselling, retraining and upskilling programs. It serves communities in Alberta and Newfoundland where there is high demand for such services. I&E has experience in delivering several skill training programs, in addition to advocating for funding and policy change to support a just transition to clean energy for workers in the oil and gas sector.

Financial Support Description:

The Foundation’s financial support will be used to hire new staff to create Iron and Earth Industries, a social enterprise that can attract both social impact and private capital investment. If successful, I&E Industries will generate revenues for the recruitment and placement of former oil and gas workers in clean energy companies, and through scaling up their delivery of training programs (many of which are in partnership with Indigenous workers). Training programs will be offered for multiple fields in which labour shortages are expected. These career areas include solar, wind, and geothermal technology, as well as retrofits and other new high-growth technologies as they emerge, such as hydrogen and energy storage.
