Indigenous Climate Action (ICA)

Background of the organization:

Indigenous Climate Action (ICA) is an Indigenous-led organization guided by a diverse group of Indigenous knowledge keepers, water protectors and land defenders from communities and regions across the country. The ICA believes that Indigenous Peoples’ rights and knowledge systems are critical to developing solutions to the climate crisis and achieving climate justice.

ICA works on connecting and supporting Indigenous communities to reinforce our place as leaders driving climate change solutions for today and tomorrow. The ICA models its work and organizational structure on systems of free, prior and informed consent and self-determination. By providing communities with knowledge and resources, the ICA hopes to inspire a new generation of Indigenous climate leaders building solutions centered around our inherent rights and cultures.

Grant Description:

The inclusion of Indigenous voices and perspectives is an essential component of the   transition to a net zero carbon economy. The demand for informed Indigenous representation in climate mitigation projects, including consultations with all levels of government, is rapidly increasing. This has resulted in the need to train a new generation of Indigenous leaders to represent their communities; to value the involvement of Indigenous elders; and to support more Indigenous communities in achieving energy self-sufficiency through the installation of renewable local power systems. With this core funding, ICA will deliver climate action training to Indigenous communities and hire a youth engagement coordinator.
