Background of the organization

The Royal Canadian Geographic Society (RCGS) is a non-profit education organization dedicated to imparting a broader knowledge and deeper appreciation of Canada: its people, places, natural and cultural heritage, and environmental, social and economic challenges. RCGS led the development of the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada (IPAC) – a project aimed at helping re-imagine Canada by presenting maps without colonial borders and by presenting stories of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples – in partnership with the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Métis National Council, Indspire and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. There are 10 maps currently on tour to schools across Canada with a growing wait list of school boards, universities and other organizations.

Project description

In the context of land-connected Reconciliation, this project includes activities such as purchasing additional maps, developing additional lesson plan(s), seeking support for translating material into several Indigenous languages, public education, and developing and implementing a promotional plan. Funding will support the purchasing of 22 new giant floor maps (88 sq. m.) to inspire and support students to walk through their own journey of reconciliation in a kinesthetic, engaging and thought-provoking way and promoting the program.
