Grant Description

Across Canada and around the world, cities are on the front lines of the most complex challenges of 21st century life. The Urban Project is a new initiative whose mission is to empower Canadian cities to address their challenges more effectively, and better address long-term needs in relation to affordable housing, public health, urban Indigenous communities, and so on. To accomplish this, the Urban Project will convene a series of 10 events across the country over the next three years to strengthen relationships between governments and among the public, private, academic and community sectors and will focus on surfacing actionable insights, scalable solutions, innovative tools and new ways of working together to address the priority issues. The gatherings will produce multi-sector action plans for cities to address their priority challenges as well as action-oriented policy research briefs on how cities can deal with specific finance, governance and legal barriers. What unifies each event is a call for greater municipal empowerment and autonomy, so that cities are better equipped to deliver for the millions of Canadians they serve.
