Days before the opening of the G7 Summit in Charlevoix, Quebec, over 50 foundations from around the world called on national leaders to take concerted, transnational action on climate change. The new coalition of foundations is called the F20, in reference to the G20 meeting last summer in Germany.

“The international Foundations Platform F20 appreciates the clear commitment for climate action and the global energy transition of six countries out of the G7”, says Bruce Lourie, President of the Ivey Foundation in Canada.
In the final summit communiqué, the G6 – Germany, France, Italy, UK, the EU, Canada and Japan – reaffirm their commitment to implement the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement as well as the allocation of the necessary resources on climate finance. The F20 group states today that focusing on the transition to renewable energy within this century still remains the number one priority to combat climate change.
“It is a signal of hope for the G20 summit in Argentina in November, where thirteen more countries are coming together, including China and India, and where the commitment on climate sustainability and energy transition has been reaffirmed in previous years and during the preparatory meetings in 2018”, says Klaus Milke, Chairman of the F20 Steering Group. Co-Chair Ramiro Fernandez of the South American Fundación AVINA adds: “the financial commitment of G7 countries is critical for the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and prevent dangerous climate change and calls upon the G6 countries to reaffirm and share their commitments with other countries at the upcoming G20 meeting in Argentina.”
In a statement that was sent to all G7 Sherpas before the summit, F20 and further Canadian foundations have encouraged a more ambitious climate policy and concrete commitments about improving climate finance and reducing fossil fuel subsidies of the G7. Just before the 3rd Sherpa meeting to the G20 summit in Argentina, the Foundations Platform F20 will hold a public event in Buenos Aires on September 6th to further accentuate the necessity for more ambitious international climate action.
