Developmental Evaluation

Developmental Evaluation Resource Library

In parallel to A Developmental Evaluation Companion, we have developed this resource library and invite you to access these resources by developmental evaluators from around the world that elaborate on the topics introduced in the book. We hope to add to these resources and invite you to contribute as we collectively continue to grow, challenge and refine the practice. To submit resources to this library, please email them to info@innoweave.ca.

Kia Tipu Te Ao Mārama

This tool introduces two really compelling evaluation frameworks: Te Korekoreka and the Niho Taniwha. It is useful when looking for frameworks embody indigenous values, perspectives and approaches to social innovation. At the heart of both evaluative frameworks are statements of values and intentions about the world. Rather than transplanting Western ideas into indigenous communities these approaches privilege indigenous world views. When employing it, keep in mind that this resource is both about the journey (the dialogue between the two organizations and what they learned from sharing together) and the frameworks.

Analysis standards of social innovations

This tool's purpose is to assist social innovators – and those who support them to – think about, analyze and evaluate their social innovations. It is useful when discussing what scaling means at the beginning of a social innovation process and/or in the creation of an evaluation design to assess the suitability of scaling or the effectiveness of a scaling strategy. The word scaling is used extensively amongst social innovators, social change makers, philanthropy, policy makers and socially minded business, yet there are only a modest number of thought pieces and resources that attempt to apply this big term in practical terms. Keep in mind that this is only ‘one’ way to frame and operationalize the concept of scaling social innovation. Social innovators should feel free to adopt and adapt it as they see fit, including parts that they may not agree with.

CECAN – The Complexity Evaluation Toolkit

This toolkit is a comprehensive resource aimed at helping evaluators and policymakers navigate the limitations of traditional evaluation approaches in complex situations. It would be most useful at the scoping and design stages of a developmental evaluation, or when navigating choices about what kind of evaluation is bet aligned in a complex policy situation. CECAN ( Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity Across the Nexus) is doing some really interesting work based on real-world cases in domains such as food, energy, water and the environment. They bring a deep and nuanced understanding of complexity into this resource. While it’s a guide that is really helpful in the up front scoping and design, many of the issues it addresses can be expected to recur and it may be something to come back to throughout a complex policy DE.
