United Way Winnipeg & Winnipeg Boldness Project

Background of the organization:

The Winnipeg Boldness Project is a social innovation initiative working to identify effective mechanisms to improve life outcomes for young children in the Point Douglas area of the North End in Winnipeg. As a project focused on research and development through social innovation, Boldness works in partnership with community-based organizations to test possible solutions to determine their effectiveness to achieve the Bold goal: children and families in Point Douglas Winnipeg will experience dramatically improved wellbeing in all aspects of self — physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.

United Way Winnipeg acts as the fiduciary.

Grant description:

Winnipeg Boldness will focus on prototyping solutions in eight areas prioritized by the local community. These include: access to the Canada Learning Bond; Hubs of Strength (a community leadership development initiative); supports for dads; health and wellness planning; natural support systems (peer networks); participation in the arts; local transportation; and a women’s sexual health program called Sacred Moon Circle. In addition, the project team will complete work on an Indigenous evaluation framework and toolkit.

Over the long term, the project’s goals are to reduce the number of children apprehended by the state, increase the number of children born into positive home environments, ensure that more children are ready to learn when they start kindergarten, and apply a culturally appropriate tool to holistically evaluate child wellbeing.
